Friends you know fall is not my jam but I do have a short list of things I LOVE and this homemade applesauce recipe has made that list. It’s easy, delicious and loved by all our friends and family. Although the debate is still out on whether or not this homemade applesauce is better eaten warm or chilled. You’ll have to make some for yourself and let me know your vote !

Here’s why you should make your own homemade applesauce :
  • It’s made with just 5 simple ingredients! (4 if you omit the cinnamon)
  • Fun for the whole family to make and enjoy
  • Big-batch friendly
  • You control the ingredients
  • Can be canned or frozen for up to a year
  • Vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free

Ingredients

  • 5lbs Apples
  • 1/2 cup Water
  • 1/4 cup Honey
  • 2 tbsp Lemon juice
  • Pinch of salt
  • Ground cinnamon (optional)

You’ll notice that I made a little note that adding cinnamon is optional. We are a family divided, some of us prefer cinnamon and some of us do not(me). Since I’m normally the one that makes the applesauce I always just add the cinnamon afterwards.

Now you may be wondering what the best apples to use are? In my opinion its personal preference. That being said our favorite kind of apples to use for this recipe are the ones gifted to us from nana and papas house. Normally a mixture of fuji, granny smith and gala.

Instructions

  1. Peel and course chop apples. If you’re lucky enough to have an apple peeler, that will definitely help speed up the process.
  2. Put apples into a large pot. Add the water, lemon juice, honey, salt and cinnamon and mix to combine. You don’t need a lot of liquid, however, you will need approximately 1/2 cup to help steam the apples.
  3. Bring liquid to a boil, reduce heat, and cover. Allow the apples to cook for approximately 25-30 minutes. Your apples should be broken up, but partially intact, and very soft.
  4. Remove apples from heat. Now you will you mash or puree your cooked apples
  5. Transfer into airtight containers, store in the fridge to enjoy!

See how easy it is to make homemade applesauce. Also, if you want to save it for later you can put in freezer safe bag/container and save for  6-9months or 12 months in the deep freezer.
