I have been dealing with kidney stones since the pregnancy of my first daughter 11 years ago. Yes, you read that right I was pregnant and got kidney stones. So unfair!

Over the years I had’nt put much thought into trying to prevent them, since I was only getting them every year or so and was able to pass them mainly on my own.

However just recently I started getting them more often as in like every 4-6 months. Each time needing more and more medical intervention. Which brings me to my last case of them and the main reason for this post.

My most recent case of  kidney stones lasted a MONTH.

I felt like every other time so I tried to tough it out like normal and was able to pass one stone at home. I started to worry when I began to develop a temperature, I spent hours in the emergency room, had blood work done, xrays, ctscans ect. I found out that I have two tubes connecting my right kidney to my bladder instead of one. This explains why I always get my stones on my right side so frequently. Anyways enough about my odd kidney tubes.

After all the tests it was determined that I would need surgery. During the first surgery the doctors put a stent in to drain the infection. The second surgery was to  blast the stones up and the final step was getting the ok to get the stent out. Needless to say it was a rough month.

Through the whole thing I shared tid bits on my instagram stories. I was shocked when I recieved so many messages from other mommas that have delt with kidney stones. I felt awful that 1. others had to go through this awful pain 2. that I didnt have the knowledge to share of how to preven them.

Now that I’m on the road to recovery I wanted to share all my knowledge. I have put together my top 5 things to do to and not to do prevent kidney stones.

I will start off by saying that I’m not a doctor or medical professional. Please consult a medical professional prior to taking anything below.

What to do:

  1. Drink ALL the water
  2. Add  lemon or Lemon Oil to water daily
  3. Rub Helichrysum oil over abdomen 2x daily
  4. Cranberry extract (400mg 2x daily)
  5. Take Magnesium supplement (250mg 2x daily)

The list of what to avoid eating and drinking is SO long I narrowed it down based on my expierience.

What not to do:

  1. Dairy products
  2. Caffeine/Alcohol
  3. Processed red meat/cold cuts
  4. Sugary foods
  5. Salty foods

Side note: I believe in the 80/20 rule. I try to eat mostly good 80% of the time so I can splurg and eat the above things 20% of the time. Cause lets be honest who could live without ice cream and wine in there life ? NOT ME
